What exactly is the difference between a pergola, an arbour, and a gazebo?

A pergola is an open structure with vertical posts and horizontal rafters. It can be beneficial in obstructing a neighbor’s view into the garden, or can be used to bring together, and finish off an outdoor seating area beautifully.

When using this sort of structure in a design it will be important to note what the light will be like when sitting underneath it. The thickness and size of the rafters will determine the amount of light that will come through. It’s a tricky structure because as the sun moves throughout the day the light will change, and the use of the pergola could be affected – example; if a few people are sitting under the pergola there might be a time when each person has the sun shining directly into their eyes.

An arbour was originally created as an archway to walk through from one area of the garden into another. It is usually adorned with a climbing rose or other creepers.

An arbour can be used to create an interesting archway either into the property, or from one garden room into another. It can also be used to frame a bench or swinging chair, to create a simple but effective focal point.

When designing with the intent to use an arbour it is incredibly important to consider the material of which the arbour is built with. It should be strong enough to carry the full weight of the climbing plant, if the material is not sturdy enough the structure will collapse.

A Gazebo is characterized by the fact that it has a solid roof, and is usually free standing a short distance from the house.

A gazebo can be used to create an entertainment area which is sheltered; this allows for the use of lights and electricity. A gazebo also allows for the opportunity to enjoy the views within the garden, if the property has a pond for example, facing the gazebo towards it allows the user to enjoy the view.

The position of the structure is crucial, as the view, aspect, and surroundings will affect the user’s enjoyment of the gazebo. This can be challenging to incorporate successfully into the design.

Garden structures can create simple, but impactfully useful and aesthetically pleasing areas to entertain, or relax in, or they can help to entice visitors into your garden to explore and journey through the space.
